A Coaches Advice & Feedback from 25+ Years of Racing Triathlons.

First Up: The Core Collection
How do you choose your race day suit? After 25+ years in this sport—moving from a complete beginner in college to racing for the top AG spot, then moving up to professional and now coaching—I've learned that your kit is so much more than just "what you wear." It's a critical piece of equipment. It's your race-day partner that can either support your performance or become a major distraction when the miles get tough.
Triathlon is inherently complex: you have to manage three sports, but really more, as nutrition, gear, and much more are part of your success! Fun fact: That very complexity is what drove Zoot to innovate back in 1983 on the shores of Kona. Born at the home of the Ironman World Championships, Zoot created the world's first triathlon-specific race suit because athletes needed a way to move through the water, onto the bike, and across the run without the friction of a wardrobe change!
Today, we have incredible technology to manage heat and slice through the wind, but the sheer number of options can be overwhelming. Where do you even start?
I'm writing this series to give you a "thought-process checklist." My goal isn't just to show you gear, but to help you find that "second skin," your “race-even training partner” that matches your specific needs and goals—whether you're chasing your very first finisher medal, a new personal best, or a podium slot.
To kick things off, let's look at the foundation of the Zoot line: The Core Tri Aero FZ . This is the suit I often recommend when comfort and confidence are the top priorities.
The Core Collection – My Athlete & Coach Perspective
This is your everyday aero suit—your comfortable, "no place for loose drag" outfit with a perfect fit. It's the affordable choice without losing sight of what matters most: comfort, a relaxed athletic fit, UV protection, and mobility across the chest and shoulders.
What I Love: All-Day Comfort
I truly love the comfort of this suit; it has become my go-to daily trainer. It is the perfect piece of gear to build confidence as you get used to the "short-connected-top" style of triathlon and is simply the best-suited cut for the multisport athlete!

The Technical Breakdown
The Design & Cut: The lines are sharp and the colors are vibrant—you won't sacrifice style here! You will feel good and look good. The women's cut fits the female form perfectly, ensuring a flattering silhouette without being restrictive, and the men's cut gives that athletic look!
The Fit: Room to Breathe The fit is intentionally on the "looser" side for maximum comfort. I recommend taking a moment to adjust the suit properly before you start your session. Once you place it, it stays in place for a reliable, "second-skin" feel.
· Pro Tip: Place your suit as you want it to fit. Once you place it, it stays in place for a reliable, "second-skin" feel.
The Padding: Super comfortable for all three! You can't feel it while running or swimming, yet the support is there throughout the ride. It's often more comfortable than most wide cycling bibs, especially the women's!
Zippers & Waistline: The zippers are well-protected to prevent any irritation and easy to adjust for venting. The shorts hold well at the waist without feeling restrictive—essential for deep breathing when pushing yourself!
- Pro Tip: For extra protection, I always recommend adding a bit of anti-chafe (like Vaseline) to sensitive areas during long miles.

Storage & Cooling The Core collection features multiple pockets, which are a massive plus for carrying nutrition.
- Pro Tip: These pockets are also great for holding ice on those scorching race days to keep your core temp down! Or to hold your keys out on a training run!
The Women's Choice: This is a "Bring Your Own Bra" (BYOB) suit to optimize your bra comfort and preference. The suit comfort allows for any choice of bra!
- Pro Tip: Pair it with the Zoot Core Tri Bra for a seamless, custom fit, and perfectly matching color!
Pro Tips Training & Racing
- The Vaseline Hack: Add Vaseline or glide to sensitive areas, including armpits and neck. This is a must for any suit to keep the skin happy! The nice thing with the Core Suit is you don't really have to apply any, but it does give that safety and moisture to your skin.
- Mental Edge: Training in this suit affirms your identity as a triathlete. When you gear up properly, you simply get stronger, building confidence and your identity.
- The "Swim Strategy": If you don't have a swimskin like the Zoot Wikiwiki Swimskin, practice swimming in your Core suit. You can swim with it fully zipped or half-open for extra mobility. The Core Suit lifts the legs and hips! It does add some resistance in the top area, but nothing that will hinder your swim, especially since the suit remains a perfect fit in the water as well. You simply want to be prepared for the feel of the suit, and train to master the suit even in the water!
- Transition Trick: If you don't swim with the top on, roll the sleeves to your elbow before sliding them back on. Ensure the suit is spread flat against your skin so it doesn't act like a "buoy" or a bunch of fabric at your waist. The Core suit makes it easy to have that option.
