Personal Bio: Tara is a professional triathlete and multi-sport coach from Toronto, Canada. Focused on long-course and Ironman races, Tara began her pro triathlon career in 2004. She is a 21-time Ironman finisher and has competed at the Ironman World Championship in Hawaii six times with a best 12th place in 2007. Tara broke the Ironman Lanzarote bike course record in 2010 and has over 25 top-10 finishes in long course races as a professional triathlete.

How did you first get into triathlons?

At Trent University, a friend of mine started the Trent Triathlon Club and suggested I try one. So I started as the swim leg of a relay, progressed to a sprint triathlon on my mountain bike with slick tires, then did a half Ironman and soon a full Ironman. I definitely caught the long distance triathlon bug and two seasons later turned pro! I immediately fell in love of the physical and mental challenge of racing the three different disciplines and there has been no stopping me ever since!

What was the first race you ever participated in and what place did you finish?

A triathlon at Trent University was my first race. I don't remember what place I finished, but it must have been first place :-) !

What is your favorite race?

I don't have one favourite, I have three:
Ironman Lanzarote, Savageman and Leadman Epic 250.

What is your favorite workout?

The Computrainer classes I teach and run speed intervals once the workout is done!

What are your favorite Zoot products and why?

People will attest to this: I love everything Zoot. At the top of my list: Ultra race gear, OVWA shoes, arm coolers, Zoot travel bag and my Prophet wetsuit. The Ultra race gear is so comfortable which means I never get chafed when racing. My OVWA shoes prevent me from losing toe nails! The arm coolers really work. I can fit EVERYTHING I need in my Zoot travel bag and the Prophet makes me swim fast and without cramping in my calves.

What is your proudest accomplishment?

Watching my athletes achieve their goals and being an Ambassador for the I WILL Foundation.

What motivates you?

My desire to keep learning, Matt Long, the feeling of a good hard workout or race.

What is your pre-race meal?

GU chomps (lots of them), GU gel, coffee and banana. I used to eat oatmeal (more real food) but the pure GU keeps any GI issues away!

What is your pre-race ritual?

Eat breakfast three hours before the start.

What is in your triathlon bag that you cannot live without?

BODY GLIDE, Lavendar hand sanitizer, Zoot recovery sandals and clean clothes to put on immediately post race.

What are your goals for the 2011 season?

Keep on training and racing well (and stay injury-free) and help my athletes to succeed!
