Personal Bio:

Rachel Challis, Mum, Pro Traithlete, Triathlon Trainer, Kid's Swim Coach. Born in England, grew up in New Zealand where I began triathlons at 18 years old. After graduationg from University in NZ, I moved to Europe where I lived with my husband for 10 years before moving to the US. After my second child was born, I started Training Transition, a triathlon training group with childcare. I now offer group, private and on-line training options and I also coach swimming to adults and children. My main goal is to keep working on balancing my family, training and work. It's a constant struggle but one that is most important to me.

How did you first get into triathlons?

I started at 18 years old in New Zealand after I chose not to be part of the New Zealand Rowing Team as it was a chance to train in my own time while studying for my degree.

What was the first race you ever participated in and what place did you finish?

Ow, that was 17 years ago....a race in Christchurch New Zealand. I remember that people were wondering who this young girl was who was challenging a local seasoned triathlete in the swim and bike....until I got to the run and had to walk!

What is your favorite race?

Wildflower 70.3 with my family and some of my triathlon group clients plus their families (Training Transition)

What is your favorite workout?

A hilly bike or hilly trail run. The bigger the hill, the more fun.

What are your favorite Zoot products and why?

Ultra Tri shorts - just a great fit and nice leg bands that don't pull tight. All ZOOT tri shoes as they are so easy to get on and off and feel like slippers. I live in them!

What is your proudest accomplishment?

Completing one of my goals when I raced the Carlsbad Triathlon 2 months after my 2nd child was born. I nursed him on the beach before the race and was handed him at the end for another feed! I love racing and feel a great accomplishment when my kids and husband are on the sideline, which is almost every race!

What motivates you?

My clients and family and races.

What is your pre-race meal?

Anything. Mexican with extra rice and beans is a popular one!

What is your pre-race ritual?

You can't have one with kids in the hotel or house!

What is in your triathlon bag that you cannot live without?

ZOOT race belt and a few GU's plus a PR*Bar.

What are your goals for the 2011 season?

My season has been rocked by the death of my stepdad last week (August 11th). He told me in tears before Vineman 70.3 'run hard for your Mum and I' when I thought these were his last words. I had the best race I have had for a long time which made me realize that I am capable of qualifying for the 70.3 World Champs....but I have had to cancel too many races this year so will finish off 2011 with a couple more 70.3's and try to get some points for the 2010 World Champs. I'd love to race the Asia Pacific Champs this year too...
