Personal Bio:

53 year old general surgeon, married 29 years, with two children Lauren 22, and Erin 19.

5 things we should know about you:

1) I work full time as a general surgeon. Triathlon is a hobby. I go to work after a tough morning work-out...not to a massage therapist!
2) I love to swim more than anything.
3) My favorite sport is open water swimming.
4) My daughter is a college swimmer who can kick my butt.
5) Married to a wonderful family physician (we have been together since we were in college) for 29 years, Dr Debra Black

How did you first get into triathlons?

-Ruptured bicep tendon from swimming overuse in 2002. Started running. Bought a bike for "cross training".

-Discovered that I am a very good runner. My best 5K run (at age 48) is 16:54.
-Thought any sport where you could ride a bike in a swimming suit was COOL!

-What was the first race you ever participated in and what place did you finish?

1989 sprint in Orlando where I just did the swim portion of the course.

What is your favorite race?

Naples Fitness Challenge (Florida). Reverse sprint format suits my talent for running, swimming while tired and hurts the strong cyclists which is my weak sport.

What is your favorite workout?

Swim set. Descending long moderate intervals to short sprints.

What are your favorite Zoot products and why?

First attracted to the race apparel. Fits well, doesn't chafe.
Shoes are great, love the sockless feature.
Excellent wet suit, especially this year's model.
COMPRESSION gear is great. I've used the socks since they first came out.
Arm coolers worked great in the 112 degree heat of Buffallo Springs, TX this year.

What is your proudest accomplishment?

Being married 29 years and withstanding the rigors of becoming a surgeon.

What motivates you?

I like every day to be an adventure. Do something different. Ride your bike to swim work out at 4:30am!

What is your pre-race meal?

Salad, Steak, baked potato, vegetable, dessert.

What is your pre-race ritual?

Got to have an Espresso Love gel 20 minutes before race time.

What is in your triathlon bag that you cannot live without?

GU gels, Chomps, power bar.

What are your goals for the 2011 season?

-Qualify for Ironman World Championships either this year at Lake Placid or for 2012 at IM Florida in November.
-Have a good race at IM 70.3 Championships at Las Vegas.

Events you are racing in this season:

Ford Ironman Lake Placid (July 24), Ironman World Championship 70.3- Las Vegas (September 11), Ford Ironman Florida (November 5)

Just did 70.3 at Buffalo Springs, Texas in Lubbock end of June.
Won age group at St Anthony's Olympic in May.
Will do some local races as well.
