Personal Bio: Born and raised in Hawaii, went to college at UC Berkeley, where I also played water polo, then graduate school in journalism at Northwestern University, became a newspaper reporter and editor in Washington, DC, then moved back to California, where I'm now the head science PR guy for UC San Diego. Along the way, I've kept swimming, running and cycling to keep my sanity and I still write, this time for Inside Triathlon, Triathlete and Competitor. I'm married, have a daughter in high school and best of all live only a short jog away from my favorite surfing spot.

5 things we should know about you:

I'll pretty much eat anything especially if hungry
I still listen to '80s music--what can I say, it was the greatest era for music
I hate jumping into cold water (unless it's head high surf or better)
I always need to hit the jacuzzi before the am swim workout
I could never make it past 10 pm on New Year's Eve even when I was young

How did you first get into triathlons?

After playing water polo at Cal in the 1970s, I starting doing ocean swims and swim-runs in the SF Bay to stay in shape and those soon turned into triathlons.

What was the first race you ever participated in and what place did you finish?

First race was at a swim meet when I was 12. I don't remember how I finished, but I remember I liked the head to head competition.

What is your favorite race?

Ironman Hawaii. I love the course, the party atmosphere, the fact that everyone shows up in peak form and, most of all, that the race takes place in Hawaii, where I was born and raised.

What is your favorite workout?

Ocean swims on Friday mornings with my swimming buddies in Del Mar. It’s fast, sometimes scary if you get dropped, but always fun.

What are your favorite Zoot products and why?

Prophet Wetsuit (floaty, warm, extremely flexible in the shoulders and I can get it off quick in transition); Ultra Speed shoes (the best and fastest for Olympic and Sprint distance tris); Ultra TT 4.0 (the most comfortable for 70.3 and Ironman races); Zoot Hoody (perfect for the So. Cal nights).

What is your proudest accomplishment?

Winning the 2009 USAT Age Group National Championship

What motivates you?

Doing something I've never done before, then trying to do it a second and third time even better.

What is your pre-race meal?

Ground turkey, canned green beans and plain white rice. It’s not the greatest tasting meal, but I rarely have stomach problems with it.

What is your pre-race ritual?

I always Velcro my wetsuit collar myself and make sure it’s nice and tight. I once let someone else do it and filled up like a blowfish when I hit the water.

What is in your triathlon bag that you cannot live without?

My cycling shoes. So easy to forget, so I always double check my bag the night before.

What are your goals for the 2011 season?

Do well at my final 3 long-course races for the year: Ironman 70.3 World Championships, Ironman World Championships and ITU Long Distance World Championships.

Events you are racing in this season:

Ironman World Championship 70.3- Las Vegas (September 11)

Ford Ironman World Championship (October 8)

November 5 ITU Long Distance World Championships, Las Vegas, NV
