Started my cycling career because my brother asked me to ride across the United States. I told him no, but the following year I asked him and we did. My training for the ride was training and racing in the Little 500 at Indiana University, which I raced in twice.
After college I moved to Chicago for 2 years and got my CPA. I loved my job, but did not want to look back at my life and say, "I wish I would have given professional cycling a try when I was young." I move to the San Diego area that fall.
I raced for a few years then was a professional for two years. Then back to a local team on which I won the USA Cycling Elite National Time Trial Championship and Masters Crit National Championship.
After that, I was looking for something new. My wife was pushing triathlon so I did a local race and had a blast winning my age group. I was hooked. I year later I raced Clearwater 70.3 World Championships and received my professional license 1.5 years after my first triathlon.
How did you first get into triathlons?
What was the first race you ever participated in and what place did you finish?
Turkey Tri in San Dimas, CA. Won my age group.
What is your favorite race?
Wildflower is awesome because of the atmosphere.
Love the venue and late start of Boise.
Favorite though...has to be all the ones that I can sleep in my own bed the night before...California, Encinitas, SDIT, San Diego Classic.
What is your favorite workout?
Wednesday ride through Camp Pendleton. I even like it better when we have a tailwind.
What are your favorite Zoot products and why?
Big fan of the running shoes. Race in the very comfortable Ultra Speed and do a lot of training in the Ultra TT. The OTEC is moving up in training miles too.
CompressRx...I don't know what life what like with out them. I have killed my legs to the point I really don't think I am going to be able to move the next day. However, putting the tights on right after the workout, I am good to go the next day. I wear the sock on all my medium to long runs. For travel, I switch, usually based on the weather, between socks and tights, but it is a must in my book.
Tri Bag...Race morning is that little bit easier knowing everything is packed so nicely in the bag. Fits everything. Comfortable to wear.
What is your proudest accomplishment?
My two daughters.
What motivates you?
Improvement. I don't think I am at the top of my game yet.
What is your pre-race meal?
Short race...bowl of cereal, banana and half a coke.
Long race...bowl of cereal, bowl of oatmeal, banana.
What is your pre-race ritual?
Talk to my wife.
What is in your triathlon bag that you cannot live without?
Swiss arm knife and electrical tape.
What are your goals for the 2011 season?
Be happy that i left everything on the course at the end of my ironman distance race this year.
