5 things we should know about you:
1) Married to my beautiful wife Rachel.
2) Have one daughter who was just born on July 5th, Kennedy Elisabeth.
3) I teach high school Health & PE
4) I coach high school basketball, cross country, and track & field
5) My faith is very important to me
How did you first get into triathlons?
Growing up there was a local triathlon held in my town (Gaylord, MI) that is actually the oldest triathlon in Michigan. My father did it a few times and we were always there helping out...usually at a run aid station. I thought it was cool and knew someday I'd like to try one out for myself. After college sports (basketball and track) I still needed something to fill that athletic void/competitiveness.
What was the first race you ever participated in and what place did you finish?
2006 East Jordan Triathlon...no idea, middle to back of the pack. I had never swam at all before this besides just playing in the lakes up here as a kid growing up.
What is your favorite race?
Mark Mellon Memorial Triathlon. My family puts on this race and it's the oldest triathlon in Michigan. The proceeds from the race go to the school (who provides all the volunteers) my family went to growing up.
What is your favorite workout?
Running fast on the track and a long ride through the hills of N. Michigan with a few friends.
What are your favorite Zoot products and why?
The Prophet wetsuit because it's by far the most comfortable suit I've worn yet and it fits me so well...not to mention how fast it is. I love the compression gear for after tough workouts. I feel it helps my recovery. All of the shoes are good. The casual apparel is sweet too.
What is your proudest accomplishment?
Marrying my wife and my newborn daughter. Athletically, I don't think it's one particular event or anything, but just the never ending drive I continue to have after the downs to keep improving. It's easy to keep rolling when things go your way, but your true character is shown by how you deal with the challenges/adversity. I'm proud of myself for always getting back up after I've gotten knocked down in whatever sport I pursued throughout my life.
What motivates you?
My family, my coach Janda Ricci-Munn, and just getting the best out of myself.
What is your pre-race meal?
Bagel with peanut butter, half a bananna, some gatorade, a coffee or two, and a powerbar for the longer races.
What is your pre-race ritual?
Get to transition nice and early to get things sorted so I don't have to be around the nutso people who freak out on race day...that just adds to the anxiety. I try to get in a good warm up!
What is in your triathlon bag that you cannot live without?
Body glide or some other anti-chafing cream. Oh, and my little notes from my wife:)
What are your goals for the 2011 season?
Not to lose a race in the state of Michigan and place top 3 overall age grouper in a major race.
Any other information you would like included on your page:
I feel very blessed to be able to do this sport. It has brought a lot of good people into my life and I've learned a lot about myself as a person. I love it...the training, racing, everything.
